An independent publication for people who want to understand the forces shaping how we work, build, and lead — without the noise.
Pivot was founded in 2023 by a small group of writers and editors who shared a common frustration: the ideas that were actually reshaping business and culture were being covered in ways that either oversimplified them into uselessness or buried them in jargon that only specialists could navigate.
There was, they felt, a middle path. One that respected both the complexity of the ideas and the intelligence of the reader. One that believed "simplified" didn't have to mean "dumbed down." One that took the stories of how people think and decide and change direction as seriously as any other form of journalism.
That conviction became Pivot. An editorial publication that is independent, reader-supported, and committed to a single standard: the clearest possible thinking about the questions that actually matter to the people building things.
We publish from New York. We write for readers everywhere. And we believe, as our name suggests, that the most interesting stories happen at the moment of change.
Read our latest essaysWe publish fewer pieces than most publications our size. We believe a reader's attention is a gift that shouldn't be wasted. Every piece we publish is one we'd be proud to have someone read on a Sunday afternoon when they have all the time in the world.
Making complex ideas accessible requires more work, not less. We respect our readers enough to do that work. We never use complexity as a proxy for authority, and we never simplify to the point of misrepresentation.
Pivot is reader-supported and takes no advertising. We have no sponsors to satisfy, no investors whose portfolio companies might benefit from favorable coverage, and no incentive other than the trust of our readers.
We are drawn to moments of change. Not to celebrate disruption for its own sake, but because the decisions people make when they're forced to change direction reveal something true about what they actually value — and what they're actually capable of.
Our flagship format. Essays are 2,000–5,000 words, deeply researched, and structured around a single argument worth making.
Shorter, more technical pieces for practitioners. Design Lab explores the craft of making things clearly and well.
Our reported journalism. Features follow specific people and organizations through the moments that define them.
